4. CONSERVE WATER


 Introduction

Water is essential to our daily lives. Whenever water is used, there is a potential for conservation both inside and outside of your home or business. Fresh water is a limited resource, making water conservation an important factor for the environment.

 With population growth, expansion of industry, increasing levels of development activity, and the potential for climate change impacts there is increasing pressure placed on the province’s water resources. Whether you are on a municipal or a private domestic water supply, water conservation is a wise practice. 

Conserving water saves energy. Using less water keeps more in our ecosystems and helps to keep wetland habitats topped up for animals like otters, water voles, herons and fish.

In a nutshell, the conservation of water refers to the careful and sustainable use of water resources to prevent waste, ensure its availability for future generations, and protect ecosystems.

BENEFITS OF THE 3Rs

The three R's of sustainability—reduce, reuse, and recycle—are critical because they not only reduce the environmental impact of human activity but also conserve natural resources and protect the environment for future generations.

Now that we have understood in detail what the 3Rs mean ( Reduce, reuse, recycle) let us take a look at some of  the benefits of these:

1. Lowering the amount of greenhouse emissions created that add to global warming as these methods prevents emissions of many greenhouse gases and water pollutants. 

2. Saving energy and money. Creating new items requires energy, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. We can reduce the need for new production while also saving energy. Conserving  materials for continuous reuse in making new products saves on costs. 

3. Decreasing pollution created from unearthing raw materials. It can also improve air quality. When waste is buried in landfills, it releases harmful pollutants like methane and carbon dioxide into the air. It reduces the amount of waste that ought to be burned, improving air quality and lessening the risk of respiratory sickness. It can help to reduce water pollution. When waste is disposed of in landfills, it can contaminate groundwater. It reduces waste, lowering the risk of water pollution.

4. Reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfills or put in incinerators. This is because we will be using products to the fullest extent of their life cycle. 

5. Conserves resources for our children’s future.

6. Helps create jobs. Reduce, reuse, and recycle can help local economies. Recycling creates jobs and promotes the circular flow of the economy.

7. Stimulates the development of greener technologies.

SIMPLE ACTIONS TO SAVE THE EARTH

 Protecting our planet starts with you. Before we go to the elaborate methods of trying to fight climate change and stop pollution, let us focus on the easy first steps anyone can take to protect our planet. 

This series will take a look at a few of the actions we can take, but first let us take a look at the reasons why we need to protect our planet. 

The first main reason being there is no other planet! If we destroy this one where will we live? where will our children live? Where will our great-great-grandchildren live?! We want to live happily and peacefully on our green-blue planet 😊

All the beauty Earth has been providing us with is dying, we need to protect all these dying species that make our Earth unique from all the other planets. 

Our health is increasingly being tested by the various new and ever mutating viruses and diseases. A healthy planet leads to a healthy life. This makes our fight against pollution so critical. All sorts of diseases and the most nuisance of it all, cancer, are becoming deadlier and more common then ever. An infant dying of cancer is the most devastating news you can hear these days testing our mental health. 

These are just some of the main reasons, there are infinite more. We might find other habitable planets in the near future but as for now this is the only planet with food, water and oxygen, not forgetting peace, love and happiness. Lets get together and love and protect it 💚

EUCALYPTUS

 Eucalyptus has over 600species, a rapidly growing plant which attain a great height. In our school gardens we have planted the Mallee Variety. 

The term Mallee is used describe various species of trees or woody plants, mainly of the genus Eucalyptus, which grow with multiple stems springing from an underground bulbous woody structure called a lignotuber, or Mallee root, usually to a height of no more than 10 m (33 ft). Over 50 percent of eucalypt species are Mallees, and they are mostly slow-growing and tough. 

Let us take a look at some of the benefits of Eucalyptus and how they help our communities. 

1. Leaves are used to make Air Fresheners.

2. Make Ointments 

Applied directly to the skin, the plant is used for treating minor aches and pains. It is also an ingredient in several over-the-counter rubs to be used as cold treatments.

3. Treatment for Respiratory Illness

Coughs, colds, sore throats, asthma, and congestion appear to respond to medicines containing eucalyptus. Relieve congestion and cough by rubbing eucalyptus oil or ointment into the chest. Another method for relieving congestion and other respiratory problems involves boiling eucalyptus leaves in a tightly covered pot filled with water then removing the pot from heat to inhale the vapors. The plant’s oil can be mixed with warm water to create a mouth rinse that helps alleviate sore throats. As an antibacterial, natural decongestant, eucalyptus often reduces the intensity and the duration of respiratory illnesses.

4. Treat Burns, Cuts & Insect Bites 

Topically, eucalyptus may be used as an antiseptic reducing the risk of infection and promoting healing. Also, because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties, eucalyptus is used to treat a variety of skin conditions, like cuts, cold sores, and athlete's foot. 

5. Help Relieve Muscle and Joint Pain

Rubbing oil from the leaves into the muscles and joints has been known to temporarily relieve pain.

6. Stimulant and stress reliever

Eucalyptus leaves and oil provide an aroma that can be useful in dealing with stress and fatigue.

7. Dental Care

Eucalyptus oils may be found in mouthwashes and toothpastes because it’s a natural bacteria fighter.

8. Used in Soaps & Cleansers

Commonly found in household cleaners, eucalyptus offers a healthy aroma and strong cleansing abilities. It is often used in spas and saunas for both refreshment and cleansing purposes.

9. Skin Care

Eucalyptus helps soothe dry skin. This plant can actually boost the ceramide level in your skin, helping your skin stay healthy and hydrated. In addition to soothing dry skin, eucalyptus helps to cool and refresh your skin.

BANANA TREES

 Banana Trees are also most commonly grown in our school gardens and provide numerous benefits to our communities. 

Bananas are grown in tropical region. Banana plants grow quickly and can reach their full height of 20-40 feet in only 9 months. After growing for about 6-8 months, the plant develops a nice crown of leaves. Then a flowering stem emerges from the top, and a large bud begins to develop. Once the bananas have been harvested, the plant dies.

Let us take a look at some of the benefits of Banana Trees: 

1. Food

Banana trees give us bananas, which is a common fruits and favorite among humans and animals. When harvesting banana the tree so-called stem is cut away. In fact, the tender inner part of the stem can be utilized as a vegetable. This stem is very fibrous so it is necessary to clean the fiber yarn properly. In some parts of the world, this stem using as a vegetable and eaten with rice. It is rich in fiber, and helps in flushing out kidney stones.

2. Nutrition

The banana flower is good source in proteins, vitamins, and flavonoids. This flower can utilize as a traditional medicine to treat different illnesses such as ulcer and bronchitis problems. It also contains a host of essential vitamins and amino acids, is low in calories, and boost metabolism which great for the overall wellness of the reproductive organs, aiding breastfeeding moms and keeping infections at bay.

The fruit is a source of vital nutrients. It is also a great digestive, which aids bowel movement and contains good fiber for your gut. PASSION FRUIT

 This month we'll be taking a look at passion fruit which are also part of our school gardens.

Passion fruit is widely grown and valued throughout the tropics and subtropics. Most Passifloras are vines which can climb to 20 or 30 feet. The fruit varies in color from purple to yellow-orange and in shape from an egg to a tennis ball. The family Passifloraceae contains about 550 species of which 400 are in the genus Passiflora. They are commonly found as understory plants in rain forests. The passifloras are herbaceous and shallow rooted. Leaves are usually alternate. The leaf margin can be toothed or entire. The unusual flowers are the outstanding characteristic of passifloras and many are grown only for their flowers. 

Passion fruit require a lot of water, particularly inland. Passion fruit plants thrive in full sun and in environments with 60–80 percent humidity. Passion fruit typically takes 12 to 18 months to bear fruit. In a tropical climate, the plants will flower and fruit year-round.

ORANGE TREES

 Orange Tress are also part of our School Gardens. Orange tree is a citrus evergreen tree with a productive lifespan of 50-60 years. Some well-cared orange trees can live up to 100 years or more. It is a flowering tree and its height in maturity can range between 16 and 50 ft. 

Orange trees are evergreens and feature glossy, dark-green leaves year-round. They flower in spring, and the little green fruits mature into the familiar oranges in winter. Oranges actually need the cold night air to turn from green to orange. Fruits sheltered inside the tree's canopy may be completely ripe but are still green-skinned or a splotchy combination of green and orange.

Let us take a look at the benefits of Orange Trees: 

1. High in Vitamin C

Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is one of the most well-known and well-researched antioxidants. Good intake of vitamin C is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer as it helps to get of free radicals that cause damage to our DNA.

LEMON TREES

 Lemon trees are also part of our school garden plants in Kenya. Lemon, is a small evergreen tree grown for its edible fruit which, among other things, are used in a variety of foods and drinks. The tree has a spreading, upright growth habit, few large branches and stiff thorns. The tree possesses large, light green leaves and produces purple-white flowers in clusters. 

Lemon trees need well-drained soil because they are extremely susceptible to root rot. They prefer climates where the temperature does not fall below freezing, but they can live in colder climates though they may not fruit or flower.

Here are some of the benefits of planting lemon trees: 

1. Health Benefits

Lemon trees are a rich source of vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium. These minerals are vital for building & maintaining strong bones, maintaining a healthy heart as well as protecting you against cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Lemons also contain proteins, carbohydrates, fats and antioxidants, which help boost the immune system which further positively impacts your health & wellness.

Lemons may also help in weight control, and digestive health. 

Citric acid may help prevent kidney stones by increasing urine volume and increasing urine pH, creating a less favorable environment for kidney stone formation.

PAW PAW TREES

 Papaya (Paw Paw) Trees are also very common plants found in our school gardens. The pawpaw is a small, deciduous tree that yields the largest fruit.  Pawpaw trees can grow to a height of about 25 feet. The leaves are dark green, shiny, and oval-shaped with pointy ends. They can grow up to 12 inches in length. In the fall, the foliage turns varying shades of yellow. These trees are famous for their fruit, which ripens in fall. The paw paw fruit is frequently described as custard-like with a flavor that is a cross between a banana and a mango. 

Paw paw trees require adequate irrigation but must be in well-draining soil conditions to prevent root rot and fungus. Be sure to protect young trees from too much sun exposure and wind. These trees have a suckering habit and will grow into a stand of paw paw trees. However, If you’re hoping to yield fruit from a paw paw tree, be sure to plant several genetically different trees in close proximity.

Here are some of the benefits of Paw Paw trees:

1. Medicinal Properties. 

One of the most prominent medicinal benefits of papaya leaf is its potential to treat certain symptoms associated with dengue fever.

 Papaya leaf teas and extracts are often used as an alternative therapy to alleviate uncomfortable digestive symptoms, such as gas, bloating, and heartburn. 

Various papaya leaf preparations are frequently used to remedy a broad range of internal and external inflammatory conditions, including skin rashes, muscle aches, and joint pain. 

The risk of developing asthma is lower in people who consume a high amount of certain nutrients. One of these nutrients is beta-carotene, contained in foods like papaya, apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, pumpkin, and carrots.

Papayas contain high levels of antioxidants vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Diets high in antioxidants may reduce the risk of heart disease. 

Just as papaya, papaya leaf juice also acts as a potent cleansing agent for the liver, thereby healing many chronic liver diseases, jaundice and liver cirrhosis.

The potassium present in the fruit is a huge supporter of kidney health. It cleans out the toxins deposited in the kidneys and reduced the accumulation of uric acid in the blood. Papaya seeds also play an important part in keeping the kidney healthy. The presence of flavonoids in it helps in keeping the cells from degenerating and prevents the kidney from dysfunctioning.

2. Hair & Skin 

Papaya leaf is frequently consumed orally or applied topically as a way to maintain soft, clear, and youthful-looking skin. When used topically, mashed papaya appears to be beneficial for promoting wound healing and preventing infection of burned areas. 

Papaya is also great for hair because it contains vitamin A, a nutrient required for sebum production, which keeps hair moisturized. Vitamin A is also necessary for the growth of all bodily tissues, including skin and hair. Adequate intake of vitamin C, which papaya can provide, is needed for the building and maintenance of collagen, which provides structure to skin.

3. Nutrition

Papayas are an excellent source of vitamin C, and one single medium fruit provides 224 percent of recommended daily intake. Papayas are also a good source of Folate, Vitamin A, Fiber, Copper, Magnesium, Potassium and Pantothenic Acid. They also have B vitamins, alpha and beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin E, calcium, potassium, vitamin K, and lycopene, the powerful antioxidant most commonly associated with tomatoes.

KENYAN SCHOOL GARDEN TREES

 Introduction 

The School Garden project initiated by SOL in collaboration with different partners aims to create a safe and productive environment for the underprivileged communities in rural Kenya. 

Schools are then trained to plant their own trees , hence able to provide food and nutrition for their members. The gardens have also helped provide income. 

We all grateful to all the local organizations, schools, teachers, students and most of all the contributors who have helped achieve this goal. 

This blog series will focus on the different trees which have been planted in the gardens, their location and their benefits. 

Together we can help achieve all the zero hunger goals and end hunger.

ZERO HUNGER CHALLENGE GOALS

 1. Sustainable Food Systems. 

Making sure that the food cycle from agriculture to consumption are sustainable. Food security and nutrition for everyone are provided through sustainable food systems, which do not jeopardize the economic, social, or environmental foundations that will provide food security and nutrition for future generations. This will include transforming into climate-friendly agricultural techniques, such as diversifying output, taking climate change into consideration. 

2. Double Small-Scale Producer Incomes and Productivity to End Rural Poverty.

Ending rural poverty would need a concerted effort to boost small-scale farmers' revenue. Small-scale farmers are also crucial to feeding a growing global population in a sustainable manner. This would entail enhancing people's well-being through sustainable livelihoods, such as raising smallholder income and production as well as providing adequate rural jobs.

3. Adapt all Food Systems to Prevent Food Loss or Waste.

Adapting all food systems to a more sustainable method entails minimizing food losses during production, storage, and transportation, as well as food waste by retailers and consumers; enabling consumer choice; and pledges from producers, retailers, and consumers around the globe. 

4. All People Have Access to Adequate Food and Healthy Diets Throughout the Year.

Increasing people's resistance to shocks and pressures through addressing poverty and injustice. Food access, which is the foundation of a healthy and varied diet, is inextricably tied to both rights – notably equity and women's rights – and resilience.

5. Abolition of all Types of Malnutrition.

Poverty and inequality are both causes and consequences of malnutrition.

Undernutrition can produce hidden hunger, wasting, and stunting, all of which have lasting consequences for both people and society. Childhood obesity is on the rise in many parts of the world. To combat stunting, ensuring widespread access to healthy meals between the beginning of pregnancy and a child's second birthday is critical.

A multi-sectoral strategy should be used to assist this, including nutrition-sensitive health care, water, sanitation, education, agriculture, social protection, and particular nutrition interventions, as well as programs to empower women.

ZERO HUNGER

What is Zero Hunger? 

Zero Hunger is the second in line of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hoping to be met by the year 2030. 

Hunger is not caused by food shortage alone, but by a combination of natural, social, and political forces. 

Climate change is contributing to the degradation of precious resources, as severe weather events, like droughts, become more common and affect harvests, leading to less food for human consumption. 

Poverty and inequality are also two drivers of hunger, affecting who can buy food, as well as what kind of food, and how much, is available. 

Hunger is also a product of war and conflict. During periods of unrest, a country's economy and infrastructure can become severely damaged. This negatively affects civilian access to food by either driving up food prices, interfering with food production, or forcing people from their homes. 

Right now, there are around 815 million people who are hungry. This number is only expected to increase as the years go on; the UN estimates that two billion more people will be undernourished by 2050. The Zero Hunger SDG focuses on finding sustainable solutions to stop world hunger.

The goals of the Zero Hunger initiative are to end hunger and make sure that enough nutritious foods are available to people by 2030. Other aspects of the goal include ending all forms of malnutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture which we will focus on in our coming articles.

SIMPLE ACTIONS TO COMBAT GLOBAL WARMING

 Everyone can help limit climate change. From the way we travel, to the electricity we use and the food we eat, we can make a difference. 

“Change only happens when individuals take action,” Aliya Haq, deputy director of NRDC’s Clean Power Plan initiative, says. “There’s no other way, if it doesn’t start with people.”

The goal is simple. Carbon dioxide is the climate’s worst enemy. It’s released when oil, coal, and other fossil fuels are burned for energy—the energy we use to power our homes, cars, and smartphones. By using less of it, we can curb our own contribution to climate change while also saving money. Here are a some easy, effective ways each one of us can make a difference:

1. Save energy at home/workplace 

  • Most of our electricity and heat is powered by coal, oil and gas. 
  • Use less energy by lowering your heating and cooling, switching to LED light bulbs and energy-efficient electric appliances, washing your laundry with cold water or hanging things to dry instead of using a dryer.
  • Power your home/workplace with renewable energy like wind/solar energy. 
  • Invest in energy efficient appliances making sure also to save water.
  • Conserve energy by better insulating our homes and buildings, and by replacing old, failing appliances with more energy-efficient models.
  • Call a home energy audit company and get an audit done for the home that will help you to identify areas that consume a lot of energy and are not energy efficient at all.
2. Walk, cycle or use public transport
  • Walking or riding a bike instead of driving will reduce greenhouse gas emissions – and help your health and fitness. For longer distances, consider taking a train or bus. And carpool whenever possible.
  • Gas-smart cars, such as hybrids and fully electric vehicles, save fuel and money
  • Choosing to live in walkable smart-growth cities and towns with quality public transportation leads to less driving, less money spent on fuel, and less pollution in the air.
  • Less frequent flying can make a big difference, too.
  • Avoid rapid acceleration and braking, and turn on cruise control on longer trips
  • Not only is bike riding healthy, but it also reduces the amount of CO2 released into the air. Walking is another easy way to reduce global warming.
  • Working a few days each month from home means one less commuter on the road contributing to greenhouse gases.
3. Eat more vegetables 
  • Eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and less meat and dairy, can significantly lower your environmental impact. 
  • Producing plant-based foods generally results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions and requires less energy, land and water.
  • Besides carbon dioxide, methane introduced into the air contributes to global warming. With meat consumed by the seconds, the number of cows breathing out methane is a huge contributor.
4. Avoid throwing food 
  • When you throw food away, you're also wasting the resources and energy that were used to grow, produce, package and transport it. And when food rots in a landfill, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. So use what you buy and compost any leftovers.
5. Reduce, Reuse, Repair & Recycle 
  • Electronics, clothes and other items we buy cause carbon emissions at each point in production, from the extraction of raw materials to manufacturing and transporting goods to market. 
  • To protect our climate, buy fewer things, shop second-hand, repair what you can and recycle.
  • Landfills already contain more than 2 million tons of plastic bottles. It takes 1.5 million barrels of oil to manufacture water bottles every year, and those bottles take more than 1,000 years to biodegrade. Have one reusable water bottle to make a big difference.
  • Reuse towels. Hang towels to dry, instead of popping them back in the wash after a few uses.
6. Change your source of energy 
  • See if you can switch to renewable sources such as wind or solar. Or install solar panels on your roof to generate energy for your home.
  • LED lightbulbs use up to 80 percent less energy than conventional incandescents. They’re also cheaper in the long run.
  • You can offset the carbon you produce by purchasing carbon offsets, which represent clean power that you can add to the nation’s energy grid in place of power from fossil fuels. But not all carbon offset companies are alike. Do your homework to find the best supplier.
7. Speak up!
  • By voicing your concerns you send a message that you care about the warming world.
  • Always try your best to educate people about global warming and its causes and after-effects. Tell them how they can contribute their part by saving energy that will be good for the environment. Gather opportunities and establish programs that will help you to share information with friends, relatives, and neighbors.
8. Reduce water waste 
  • Saving water reduces carbon pollution, too. That's because it takes a lot of energy to pump, heat, and treat your water. So take shorter showers, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, and switch to WaterSense-labeled fixtures and appliances. 
9. Pull the plug(s) 
  • Don't leave fully charged devices plugged into your home's outlets, unplug rarely used devices or plug them into power strips and timers, and adjust your computers and monitors to automatically power down to the lowest power mode when not in use.
10. Plant trees
  • Reforestation is the most cost-effective way to prevent global warming. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, so planting more trees can help reduce the amount of carbon in our atmosphere. In fact, we could remove roughly two-thirds of human-made carbon just by letting all forests regrow. 
  • Protect what remains of our existing tropical forests .
11. Educate 
  • Give to a charity that makes school more affordable and accessible for those in need in low- and lower-middle-income countries. 
  • Always try your best to educate people about global warming and its causes and after-effects. Tell them how they can contribute their part by saving energy that will be good for the environment. Gather opportunities and establish programs that will help you to share information with friends, relatives, and neighbors.
12. Avoid products with a lot of packaging
  • Just don’t buy products with a lot of packaging. When you buy such products, you will end up throwing the waste material in the garbage, which then will help in filling landfill sites and pollute the environment. Also, discourage others from buying such products.
13. Celebrate Arbor Day & Earth Day 
  • Although most of us hear about these days in passing, see what the buzz is all about. Plant a tree, pick up trash, or join a forum.
14. Become aware of your contribution 
  • With technology within your fingertips, finding information about protecting the environment is everywhere. To help emit less CO2, the first step is being aware of how much you can contribute.
Preventing global warming is more important than ever. We're the last generation that can change the course of climate change, and will be the first to face it's consequences if we don't act now.
