 How Learning Transforms Women’s Lives

Education is one of the most powerful tools for change—especially when placed in the hands of women. It opens doors, builds confidence, and gives women the freedom to make informed choices that shape their futures. At The SOL Foundation, we believe that empowering women begins with access to knowledge, which is why we’ve made education a core pillar of our #SOLEmpowerment initiative.

One of the most moving and impactful examples of this belief in action is the story of Rizwana, a woman whose life and leadership have been shaped—and strengthened—through education.


Rizwana: A Story of Resilience, Learning, and Leadership

Rizwana holds an MBA in Business and Marketing, but her journey to finding a fulfilling career was far from straightforward. Living with a chronic disability, she often faced challenges securing jobs that could accommodate her needs. Though she worked at various organizations, none truly gave her the fulfillment or recognition her skills deserved—until she found The SOL Foundation.

Rizwana began as a volunteer, applying her knowledge of website management, social media marketing, and digital content creation. Then came the 2020 pandemic—a period of uncertainty for many, but also a time of opportunity. With a bold vision and quiet determination, Rizwana stepped into a leadership role, helping The SOL Foundation expand its reach globally.

Today, Rizwana is not only a key figure in the organization’s global strategy but a living testament to what women can achieve when given the tools to grow.


Learning Without Limits

What makes Rizwana’s story so powerful isn’t just her leadership—it’s her commitment to continuous learning. She understands that education doesn’t end with a degree. In today’s fast-moving world, staying relevant means staying curious.

She has completed courses with Acumen, earned Google Certificates, and participated in training offered by The SOL Foundation. She is now building her expertise as a UI/UX designer and venturing into the dynamic world of AI technology, showing us all what it looks like to adapt, evolve, and thrive.

Despite her humble nature, Rizwana’s efforts have not gone unnoticed:

BENEFITS OF PLANTING TREES

In our last article, we sifted through some of the benefits, let us now look in detail at how plants are helping us and saving the environment: 

1. Oxygen Production

Through the process of photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere. This oxygen is essential for human and animal respiration, providing the air we breathe to sustain life.


2. Carbon Sequestration

Trees act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in their biomass. By removing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the air, trees help mitigate climate change by reducing the overall concentration of greenhouse gases responsible for trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere.


3. Biodiversity Support 

Trees provide habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species. Forests, in particular, are highly diverse ecosystems that support numerous species, from insects to mammals. The presence of trees helps preserve biodiversity by offering food, shelter, and breeding grounds for various organisms.


4. Soil Conservation 

Tree roots help anchor the soil, preventing erosion caused by wind and water. By holding the soil in place, trees help maintain soil fertility and structure, reducing the loss of topsoil and preserving valuable agricultural land.


5. Temperature Regulation

Trees provide shade, which helps reduce temperatures in their immediate surroundings. This natural cooling effect is particularly beneficial in urban areas, where the prevalence of concrete and asphalt can lead to higher temperatures, known as the urban heat island effect.


6. Water Conservation 

Tree roots absorb rainwater, reducing runoff and helping to recharge groundwater supplies. By intercepting rainfall and allowing it to infiltrate into the soil, trees contribute to the overall health of watersheds and help prevent flooding and erosion.


7. Fruit and Nut Production

Many tree species bear edible fruits, nuts, or seeds, providing a sustainable source of food for humans and wildlife. These nutritious offerings contribute to local food security and support biodiversity by attracting a variety of animals that feed on fruits and nuts.


8. Wood and Timber Resources

Trees are valuable renewable resources used for wood products, such as lumber, paper, and furniture. Sustainable forestry practices ensure that trees are harvested responsibly, allowing for the continued availability of wood and timber while preserving forest ecosystems.


9. Carbon Storage 

Trees store carbon within their biomass, including their trunks, branches, and leaves. This stored carbon represents a significant reservoir that helps offset carbon emissions from human activities, acting as a natural means of carbon sequestration.


10. Community Well-being 

Green spaces, including parks, forests, and urban tree-lined streets, contribute to the overall well-being of communities. Access to nature has been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced stress, improved mental health, and increased physical activity. Additionally, the presence of trees enhances the aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods and creates more pleasant and livable environments for residents.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER

We have seen why it is important to conserve water and so in our last article under the water conservation chapter we shall look at the simple ways in which you can conserve water:

1. Stop Leaks 

Check all water-using appliances, equipment, and other devices for leaks. Running toilets, steady faucet drips, home water treatment units, and outdoor sprinkler systems are common sources of leaks.

Frequently checking for leaks helps to ensure you aren’t using large amounts of water. 

2. Plant the right plants 

Whether you're installing a new landscape or changing the existing one, select plants that are appropriate for your climate. Consider landscaping techniques designed to create a visually attractive landscape by using low-water and drought-resistant grass, plants, shrubs, and trees. If maintained properly, climate-appropriate landscaping can use less than one-half the water of a traditional landscape.

3. Provide only the water plants need

 Automatic landscape irrigation systems are a home's biggest water user. To make sure you're not overwatering, adjust your irrigation controller at least once a month to account for changes in the weather.

4. Install Water Saving Devices

Adding water-saving devices to your home or business can help to conserve water. Consider adding; Water faucet aerators, Low-flow showerheads and Toilet dams. 

5. Water Conservation tips for the kitchen

  • Take foods out of the freezer early to allow plenty time to thaw rather than running water over it.
  • Keep water in the fridge so you don’t have to run the tap to get cold water.
  • Completely fill the dishwasher before you turn it on. It can use 35-45 litres per cycle.
  • If you wash dishes by hand, don’t leave the water running for rinsing.
  • Don’t let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. Just rinse them in a stoppered sink or a pan of clean water.
  • Keep cooking fats, oils and grease out of the drain. They can stick to and block the inside of pipes, which can lead to sewer back-ups and basement flooding.
6. Use water Wisely for laundry 

Purchase a high efficiency washing machine and try to only do laundry when the machine is full.


7. Other Daily Water Saving Habits

  • Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks.
  • When washing your car, rather than use a running hose consider using a bucket, a sponge, and a hose with a trigger nozzle.
  • Check garden hoses and connections frequently and keep them drip-free. Leaks outside the house may not seem as bad since they are not as visible, but they can be just as wasteful as leaks inside.

1. REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE




‘Reduce, reuse and recycle’ targets waste and ultimately avoids making it in the first place. The three R's of sustainability—reduce, reuse, and recycle—are critical because they not only reduce the environmental impact of human activity but also conserve natural resources and protect the environment for future generations.

REDUCE :  How can I reduce the amount of waste I produce?

Waste prevention reduces the generation of waste in the first place, so it is the most preferred method of waste management and goes a long way toward protecting the environment. You can reduce waste by:

  • Purchasing durable, long-lasting goods.
  • Seeking products and packaging that are as toxic free.
  • Redesigning products to use less raw material in production, have a longer life, or be used again after its original use.
  • Only buy what you need
  • Buy in bulk
  • Look for items that you can re-use
REUSE : How can I reuse what I have?

This looks at how you can use certain items again before replacing them. Here are some ideas:

  • Refill a water bottle with water from home instead of buying a new one
  • Update your computer rather than throwing it out and getting a replacement
  • Ditch plastic bags and choose reusable, environmentally-friendly bags instead
  • Use durable coffee mugs.
  • Reuse boxes.
  • Purchase refillable pens and pencils.
  • Participate in a paint collection and reuse program.
  • Use cloth napkins or towels.
  • Donate old magazines or surplus equipment.
  • Turn empty jars into containers for leftover food.
As well as helping the environment, you could save money too!

RECYCLE : How can I recycle the products I use?

Before you throw something away, think about whether all or part of it could be recycled. Recycling prevents the emissions of many greenhouse gases and water pollutants, and saves energy. Materials that can be recycled include: 

  • Glass
  • Cardboard
  • Aluminum
  • Lead batteries
  • Paper
  • Textile
  • Wood
Sometimes, two more 'R's can be added to the three basic ones.

  • Rethink can be added to the start of the list. It means we should think about the way our actions impact the environment.
  • Recover is sometimes added to the end of the list. It refers to the act of putting waste products to use. For example, decomposing garbage produces methane gas, which can be recovered and burnt to produce energy.

PASSION FRUIT

 This month we'll be taking a look at passion fruit which are also part of our school gardens.

Passion fruit is widely grown and valued throughout the tropics and subtropics. Most Passifloras are vines which can climb to 20 or 30 feet. The fruit varies in color from purple to yellow-orange and in shape from an egg to a tennis ball. The family Passifloraceae contains about 550 species of which 400 are in the genus Passiflora. They are commonly found as understory plants in rain forests. The passifloras are herbaceous and shallow rooted. Leaves are usually alternate. The leaf margin can be toothed or entire. The unusual flowers are the outstanding characteristic of passifloras and many are grown only for their flowers. 

Passion fruit require a lot of water, particularly inland. Passion fruit plants thrive in full sun and in environments with 60–80 percent humidity. Passion fruit typically takes 12 to 18 months to bear fruit. In a tropical climate, the plants will flower and fruit year-round.

1. Provides Nutrients

Passion fruit is a beneficial fruit with a healthful nutrition profile. It contains high levels of vitamin A, which is important for skin, vision, and the immune system, and vitamin C, which is an important antioxidant. Passion fruit also contains phosphorus, niacin, and vitamin B-6, all of which a healthy body also needs. Passion fruit also gives your body calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and folate. These help your kidneys, nerves, muscles, and heart rhythm in big ways.

2. Rich in Antioxidants

Passion fruit is rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Antioxidants play a vital role in keeping the body’s systems healthy, they help improve blood flow, specifically to the brain and nervous system. They also reduce cellular stress and reduce inflammation in the body, both of which have links to diseases, such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. 

3. Great Source of Fiber

Passion fruit pulp contains a lot of dietary fiber. Fiber is a crucial component of every diet. It helps regulate the digestive system and keep the gut healthy, preventing constipation and bowel disorders. Eating passion fruit regularly may help to prevent constipation and improve digestion and overall health.

4. Boosts the Immune System

Passion fruit is rich in vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that helps protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Vitamin C boosts the immune system by helping the body absorb more iron from plant-based foods, and may improve the body’s ability to fight off infections in the body.

5. Passion Fruit Leaves

Passionfruit Leaves are small to medium in size and are deeply lobed and oblong in shape. They have many health benefits, they can be cooked, added to your salads or made tea with. Passion fruit leaves have fiber that reduces the risk of heart disease. They contain vitamin A which boosts eye health and also contain vitamin C which reduces anxiety.

6. Fights Cancer

Any fruit or vegetable that has a high level of antioxidants in it is a great food to add to a cancer-fighting diet. Antioxidants kill the free radicals that mutate healthy cells into cancerous cells. Passion fruit also contains vitamin C, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, all three of which have been proven to come along with cancer-fighting properties.

7. Improves Bone Health

Iron, copper, magnesium, and phosphorus are all found in passion fruit, making it a rich source of the minerals that are important to bone health. These minerals play a vital role in increasing bone mineral density as well as increasing bone strength. The minerals contained in passion fruit help your bones create new bone material, strengthen existing bone material, and speed up the process of recovery and repair your body uses to heal when injuries occur.

8. Pregnancy Health

Benefits of passion fruit include good for expecting moms as it is an immunity booster, good source of fiber, maintain a healthy blood pressure, improves the heart’s health, decrease the risk of cognitive decline, improves digestive health and promotes restful sleep.

ZERO HUNGER

What is Zero Hunger? 

Zero Hunger is the second in line of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hoping to be met by the year 2030. 

Hunger is not caused by food shortage alone, but by a combination of natural, social, and political forces. 

Climate change is contributing to the degradation of precious resources, as severe weather events, like droughts, become more common and affect harvests, leading to less food for human consumption. 

Poverty and inequality are also two drivers of hunger, affecting who can buy food, as well as what kind of food, and how much, is available. 

Hunger is also a product of war and conflict. During periods of unrest, a country's economy and infrastructure can become severely damaged. This negatively affects civilian access to food by either driving up food prices, interfering with food production, or forcing people from their homes. 

Right now, there are around 815 million people who are hungry. This number is only expected to increase as the years go on; the UN estimates that two billion more people will be undernourished by 2050. The Zero Hunger SDG focuses on finding sustainable solutions to stop world hunger.

The goals of the Zero Hunger initiative are to end hunger and make sure that enough nutritious foods are available to people by 2030. Other aspects of the goal include ending all forms of malnutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture which we will focus on in our coming articles.

HOW CAN CHILDREN HELP PREVENT GLOBAL WARMING

We have looked at simple steps we can take at home to combat climate change. So how can children help? There is an increasing importance of teaching our future generations on how to take care of our delicate planet after all they are going to be living in it! So why not start now. 

So here are a few ways in which children can actively take part in fighting climate change: 

1. Conserve energy 

  • Turn off the lights.
  • Close doors immediately so heat does not escape.
  • Take short showers.
  • Walk or bike if you can (instead of having your parents drive you).
  • Turn off your computer when not in use.
2. Convince people around you to save energy 

Ignorance has been one of the main roots of global warming . So share what you have learnt through words and actions. 

  • Replace incandescent with fluorescent lights. (This saves a lot of money!)
  • Ask your parents or adults around you not to leave the car running needlessly. 
  • Recycle  (this saves energy in manufacturing).
  • Run the dishwasher and other appliances on energy saver mode.
  • Keep the house at 68°F or less. And make sure the heat goes off at night and when everyone is away.
  • Start a conservation club at school to raise awareness. Get your fellow students and teachers on board to have the school reduce energy consumption.

3. Keep learning 

As much as we try to conserve and use sustainable methods and products in our day to day, finding and implementing sources of energy is also crucial. 
Kids are the future of our planet and they are the ones who will be finding better ways to conserve and save it, therefore education is the key to becoming a responsible Earth citizen and continue making good decisions for our planet in helping to find scientific, technological, economic and/or political solutions.

EFFECTS ON URBAN HEAT ON HEALTH

 Health is an important motivator in discussions of climate change. Exposure to high temperatures increase risks for many health conditions, some of them being: 

  • Heat cramps
  • Heat exhaustion 
  • Heat stroke 
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Poor reproductive outcomes
  • Behavioral and mental health conditions
On average, heat is associated with more fatalities than other weather-related events. Death and illness directly attributable to heat are only a portion of total health impacts.

Populations particularly vulnerable to heat related illness and death include: 
  • Elderly 
  • Those with chronic conditions 
  • Pregnant women
  • Low income population

CLIMATE CHANGE / TEMPERATURE RISES

 INTRODUCTION

This new Blog Series takes a look at climate change with the emphasis on the recent global temperature rises. We touch through definitions of climate change, causes of climate change focusing on temperature rises and look at what actions we can take to lessen the effects and save our planet. 

CLIMATE CHANGE 

Climate change is the global phenomenon of climate transformation characterized by the changes in the usual climate of the planet (regarding temperature, precipitation, and wind) that are especially caused by human activities. As a result of unbalancing the weather of Earth, the sustainability of the planet’s ecosystems is under threat, as well as the future of humankind and the stability of the global economy.

NASA scientists have observed Earth’s surface is warming, and many of the warmest years on record have happened in the past 20 years.

NASA’s definition of climate change says it is “a broad range of global phenomena created predominantly by burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to Earth’s atmosphere. These phenomena include the increased temperature trends described by global warming, but also encompass changes such as sea-level rise; ice mass loss in Greenland, Antarctica, the Arctic and mountain glaciers worldwide; shifts in flower/plant blooming; and extreme weather events.”

WEATHER vs CLIMATE CHANGE

Weather describes the conditions outside right now in a specific place. For example, if you see that it’s raining outside right now, that’s a way to describe today’s weather. Rain, snow, wind, hurricanes, tornadoes — these are all weather events.

Climate, on the other hand, is more than just one or two rainy days. Climate describes the weather conditions that are expected in a region at a particular time of year.

CLIMATE CHANGE vs GLOBAL WARMING

According to the US Geological Survey, global warming is just one aspect of climate change. In fact, they say that global warming refers to the rise in global temperatures due mainly to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. 

On the other hand, climate change refers to the increasing changes in the measures of climate over a long period of time – including precipitation, temperature, and wind patterns.

WHAT CAN BE DONE

 Animals are going extinct—but it’s not too late

Around the world, animals are facing extinction. For some, there may be time for us to change their fate.

Research shows that animal agriculture is a major threat to many species facing extinction, from habitat loss to deforestation and more. Climate change, putting countless animals and ecosystems at risk, is also driven in part by animal agriculture, which causes an estimated 14.5 to 51 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. 

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN reports that around 44 percent of livestock emissions are in the form of methane gas, and 27 percent in the form of carbon dioxide. So, with animal agriculture taking such a heavy toll in the climate crisis, is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint enough?

Many experts and environmental advocates say that dietary change is also needed, and individuals who are able to can take action by reducing or eliminating our consumption of meat. This is especially needed in the U.S., where meat consumption is growing at an alarming rate and around 99 percent of farmed animals are raised on industrial factory farms.  

One step you can take today is to calculate your carbon footprint using this tool from the Nature Conservancy, then work to reduce it. 

Dr. Jane Goodall has said, “With language, we can ask, as can no other living being, those questions about who we are, and why we are here. And this highly developed intellect means, surely, that we have a responsibility toward the other life forms of our planet whose continued existence is threatened by the thoughtless behavior of our own human species.” 

Just as we have the power to threaten other species, we have the power—and the responsibility—to save them.

Here are some other ways which we can help:

  •  Be sure that fish and other food you buy don’t come from overharvested areas.
  • Before you buy wood, make sure it comes from a “sustainable forest,” a forest where trees are replanted.
  • Don’t let your pets hunt wild animals.
  • Don’t use many plastic bags when they’re not necessary.
  • Help reduce traffic and exhaust: Support bike-friendly cities and roads. Use public transportation when you can.
  •  Don’t buy wood or wood products from threatened native forests like Pacific maple, California redwood, mahogany, ebony, or teak.
  • Don’t release pets—including aquarium fish, turtles, and birds—into the wild.
  • Always make sure you throw away your garbage in a trash can and avoid releasing balloons into the air.
  • Save energy: Use energy efficient light bulbs and appliances. Turn off power when it’s not in use.
  • Buy recycled or salvaged wood whenever possible.
  • Don’t travel with wild plants and animals.
  • Buy Eco-friendly products
  • Follow the 3 Rule - Reuse, Reduce, Recycle
  • Don't buy souvenirs made from endangered (or any wildlife) species 
  • Eat less meat
  • Spread Awareness : Get involved 
We have the power to stop animal extinction, and we must act now. Everyone can make a change, small may it be, to protect not only the animals, but the whole environment (including ourselves).

INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE

 In this chapter we shall look at some inspirational people around the globe who have been and are strong warriors in the fight of climate change and a sustainable environment. We can learn a lot from their lives and follow their research, teachings, methods into a better world for our future. 


GRETA THUNBERG, SWEDEN

In August 2018, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, 15, spent her school days outside the Swedish parliament calling for stronger action on climate change by holding up a sign reading "Skolstrejk fΓΆr klimatet" (school strike for climate). Her image went viral and later that year, she addressed the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which sparked multiple school protests around the world. 

Her global influence has been dubbed the "Greta Effect" and she was named Time magazine's person of the year in 2019. She has received widespread recognition for her straight-talking manner, both in public and to political leaders around the world.

She is an inspiration to many, her age and elder. And those younger look up to her to follow her footsteps in taking climate action. 


THE LATE WANGARI MAATHAI; ENVIRONMENTALIST, NOBEL PRIZE WINNER. KENYA

The late Wangari Maathai had great persuasive powers working as Kenya’s assistant minister for the environment. Wangari single-handedly talked the Mexican army, French celebrities, Japanese geishas and thousands of schools to plant trees. She spent most of her life planting saplings. She was the founder of the Green Belt Movement, an initiative through which billions of trees have been planted and millions of more others pledged.

Wangari succeeded in putting deforestation high on the African agenda and made tree planting an act of change in which everyone must engage.

An inspiration many young environmental activists who continue her work in the country. 

CHRISTIANA FIGUERES, COSTA RICA

As head of the UN climate change convention, Christiana Figueres brought together the biggest voices in government, finance and technology, NGOs and activists to deliver the historic 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. She persuaded 195 countries to commit to keeping a global temperature rise this century below two degrees Celsius. 

She's also the founder of the Global Optimism group, a platform which works with organizations to make their systems more sustainable. Her new book, The Future We Choose: Surviving The Climate Crisis, focuses on changing people's consciousness towards climate change and offers 10 actions which include building gender equality. Her goal is to halve our emissions by 2030.

DR JANE GOODALL, UK

In the early 1960s, 26-year-old Jane Goodall travelled from England to what is now Tanzania and ventured into the little-known world of wild chimpanzees. Equipped with only a notepad, binoculars and a passion for wildlife, Goodall opened the world's eyes to humankind's closest living relatives. 

Her incredible field research spans over 60 years and has redefined species conservation to include the needs of both local people and the environment, as well as showing the world how to protect chimpanzees from extinction. 

In 1977, Dr Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute, an international community that drives conservation. She's now an activist who speaks about the plight of wild chimpanzees and the environmental crisis, urging us all to take action.

ISATOU CEESAY, THE GAMBIA

Known in The Gambia as the "Queen of Plastic", Isatou Ceesay has been empowering women there to recycle plastic waste, the country's biggest pollutant, for 17 years. 

Along with four others, Ceesay initiated a recycling project called One Plastic Bag in 1998 near her native village, which aimed to educate communities on the necessity to reclaim waste and turn it into revenue. Every week, members of the Women Initiative The Gambia (WIG) produce craft wallets, bags and balls for children using the reclaimed plastic bags which they cut, knit and sew. The group has amassed more than 2,000 members in 40 different communities throughout the country with many communities now opting to use paper bags in local stores.

Having become the fastest solo sailor to circumnavigate the globe in 2005, Dame Ellen MacArthur saw firsthand the negative impact of marine waste. She launched the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2010, which aims to reinvent traditional methods of production and consumption and create sustainable alternatives. 

In 2018, the foundation launched its New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in collaboration with UN Environment to eliminate plastic waste which saw big-name companies such as H&M Group, L'OrΓ©al and Unilever commit to limiting or eradicating their plastic packaging.

PAUL WATSON, CANADA 

Watson was an early member of Greenpeace International (founded in 1971). During his years with the organization, he often employed daring and innovative tactics to defend wildlife from hunters, such as positioning his inflatable Zodiac boat between a pod of sperm whales and the harpoon of a large Soviet whaling vessel or forcing sealing ships to a halt by standing on the ice in their path. He also was known to handcuff himself to a pile of seal pelts being hoisted up onto a sealing vessel. 

Watson shared his passion for animals and the environment through his involvement with numerous other organizations, including Defenders of Wildlife, Friends of the Wolf, Fund for Animals, the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals, and the Sierra Club, of which he was director (2003–06).

WILLIAM (BILL) MCKIBBEN, AMERICA

Bill McKibben is an American environmentalist, author, and journalist who has written extensively on the impact of global warming. 

 Bill McKibben is also a Schumann Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College. In 2007, with six Middlebury College students, McKibben set up Step It Up 2007, which organized more than 1400 climate change demonstrations across the United States. He now leads a similar campaign on a global basis with the group 350.org, and in 2011 he led the fight to stop the Keystone Pipeline project.

ANGELA MERKEL, GERMAN CHANCELLOR

Angela Merkel is quite vocal in matters of climate change and an advocate of green living on a global stage. She stands among the few with a grasp of what failed humanity means and an avid player remaining to hammer out the 1997 Kyoto global warming agreement. Under her leadership, Germany is spearheading climate change policies. The country wants 40% cuts within 13 years without resorting to nuclear power.

MARINA SILVA, BRAZIL

Marina, a Brazilian environmentalist, spent most of her childhood collecting rubber from the Amazon forest. She demonstrated against the destruction of wrought by illegal loggers. Under her watch deforestation has reduced by over 70% with millions of reserves given to traditional communities.
