WOMEN IN STEM

Encouraging Girls to Pursue Science and Technology

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are among the fastest-growing fields in today’s world, shaping everything from medicine and climate solutions to artificial intelligence and space exploration. Yet, despite progress, women continue to be underrepresented in these fields, especially in leadership positions.

Encouraging girls to explore STEM is not just about equity—it’s about unlocking innovation, diverse perspectives, and solutions that better serve society as a whole.

Why Representation in STEM Matters

For decades, STEM fields were seen as “male-dominated,” leaving women to battle stereotypes, limited opportunities, and systemic barriers. Today, while more women are entering STEM, challenges remain:

👩‍🔬 Representation Gaps – Women make up nearly half the global workforce but hold less than a third of STEM jobs.

📉 Drop-off Rates – Even those who study STEM often leave the field due to lack of mentorship, hostile work environments, or limited career advancement opportunities.

🌍 Global Implications – With women excluded, we lose out on talent and creativity needed to tackle urgent global issues.

Greater female participation in STEM ensures that innovations reflect diverse experiences and benefit entire communities.

Breaking the Barriers

So, how can we inspire more girls to step into STEM with confidence?

🔹 Early Exposure and Education

Girls need to see STEM as an option from a young age—through hands-on experiments, coding clubs, robotics, and science fairs. Early positive experiences help counter stereotypes before they take root.

🔹 Challenging Stereotypes

Representation matters. Showcasing female scientists, engineers, and innovators helps break the outdated narrative that STEM is “not for girls.”

🔹 Mentorship and Role Models

Mentorship is key. Having a woman guide, encourage, and share her journey in STEM can make all the difference for a young girl deciding whether to pursue the same path.

🔹 Creating Supportive Environments

STEM workplaces and schools must foster inclusivity, ensuring women feel welcomed, respected, and able to thrive.

Creating Spaces for Women to Thrive

At The SOL Foundation, we believe that empowering women in STEM is central to creating a more equitable and innovative future. Through our #SOLEmpowernment initiative, we focus on:

💡 Mentorship Programs – Connecting young girls with women leaders in STEM fields who can inspire and guide them.

💡 Skill-Building Workshops – Partnering with organizations that are offering training in coding, digital literacy, and emerging technologies, ensuring girls gain both confidence and competence.

💡 Awareness Campaigns – Sharing stories of women breaking barriers in STEM to motivate the next generation.

💡 Collaboration with Schools and Communities – Encouraging science-based extracurriculars that make STEM fun, accessible, and exciting for girls.

By creating opportunities and support systems, we hope to show young women that STEM is not just possible—it’s theirs to claim.

The Future is Female—and STEM-Powered

When girls are given equal opportunities in STEM, they don’t just succeed—they redefine what’s possible. From pioneering medical research to building sustainable solutions, women in STEM are essential to solving tomorrow’s challenges.

The journey starts with encouragement, mentorship, and support. Let’s commit to raising a generation of women who will lead with brilliance, courage, and innovation.

✨ Because when she codes, she creates. When she designs, she disrupts. And when she leads in STEM, the whole world advances.

BENEFITS OF PLANTING TREES

In our last article, we sifted through some of the benefits, let us now look in detail at how plants are helping us and saving the environment:

1. Oxygen Production

Through the process of photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere. This oxygen is essential for human and animal respiration, providing the air we breathe to sustain life.

2. Carbon Sequestration

Trees act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in their biomass. By removing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the air, trees help mitigate climate change by reducing the overall concentration of greenhouse gases responsible for trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere.

3. Biodiversity Support

Trees provide habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species. Forests, in particular, are highly diverse ecosystems that support numerous species, from insects to mammals. The presence of trees helps preserve biodiversity by offering food, shelter, and breeding grounds for various organisms.

4. Soil Conservation

Tree roots help anchor the soil, preventing erosion caused by wind and water. By holding the soil in place, trees help maintain soil fertility and structure, reducing the loss of topsoil and preserving valuable agricultural land.

5. Temperature Regulation

Trees provide shade, which helps reduce temperatures in their immediate surroundings. This natural cooling effect is particularly beneficial in urban areas, where the prevalence of concrete and asphalt can lead to higher temperatures, known as the urban heat island effect.

6. Water Conservation

Tree roots absorb rainwater, reducing runoff and helping to recharge groundwater supplies. By intercepting rainfall and allowing it to infiltrate into the soil, trees contribute to the overall health of watersheds and help prevent flooding and erosion.

7. Fruit and Nut Production

Many tree species bear edible fruits, nuts, or seeds, providing a sustainable source of food for humans and wildlife. These nutritious offerings contribute to local food security and support biodiversity by attracting a variety of animals that feed on fruits and nuts.

8. Wood and Timber Resources

Trees are valuable renewable resources used for wood products, such as lumber, paper, and furniture. Sustainable forestry practices ensure that trees are harvested responsibly, allowing for the continued availability of wood and timber while preserving forest ecosystems.

9. Carbon Storage

Trees store carbon within their biomass, including their trunks, branches, and leaves. This stored carbon represents a significant reservoir that helps offset carbon emissions from human activities, acting as a natural means of carbon sequestration.

10. Community Well-being

Green spaces, including parks, forests, and urban tree-lined streets, contribute to the overall well-being of communities. Access to nature has been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced stress, improved mental health, and increased physical activity. Additionally, the presence of trees enhances the aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods and creates more pleasant and livable environments for residents.

Take a look at what some of our social media family members had to say on the benefits of planting trees:

CHAPTER 6: PLANT A TREE

In a world focused on the environment, planting trees is a simple and impactful way for individuals to contribute. Trees are essential for balancing ecosystems, cleaning the air, and providing homes for various species. Planting a tree is an uncomplicated yet powerful action that can help create a greener and more sustainable future.

In the coming articles let us explore why planting trees matters and how this straightforward effort can have a positive, lasting effect on our planet.

Planting trees emerges as a potent and straightforward solution to address pressing environmental concerns. Despite its apparent simplicity, this act yields profound benefits that contribute to saving our planet.

Firstly, trees play a pivotal role in oxygen production through photosynthesis, making the air we breathe healthier. Moreover, they act as effective carbon sinks, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide to combat climate change.

Beyond the environmental realm, trees foster biodiversity by creating habitats for various wildlife, ensuring a resilient and balanced ecosystem. They also prevent soil erosion, promote water conservation by absorbing rainwater, and contribute to temperature regulation by providing natural shade.

Planting trees also help enhances the aesthetics of our surroundings, creating more enjoyable and livable communities. Green spaces not only benefit the environment but also positively impact our mental well-being.

Take a look at what some of  the responses from our Social Media family on how planting trees can save the planet:

Facebook:

Mr. Environment -

"Planting a tree is not about digging a hole and burry the tree seedling roots in the soil. But it's a matter of change, change of ones attitude and mind set, a change that inspires someone to act.

A lot have been said about the benefits of planting trees, most of them only focusing on environmental matters. Have we ever ask ourselves about the spiritual benefits of planting trees? For Muslims... It is believed that whoever plants a tree and delightful look after it until it bares fruits and beasts, birds, humans and other creatures feeds from it, these will be for his/her own benefits. This simple means planting trees is concerned as a good deed and is one of the ways you can use to add weight on your good deeds on the eyes of the creator. "

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER

We have seen why it is important to conserve water and so in our last article under the water conservation chapter we shall look at the simple ways in which you can conserve water:

1. Stop Leaks

Check all water-using appliances, equipment, and other devices for leaks. Running toilets, steady faucet drips, home water treatment units, and outdoor sprinkler systems are common sources of leaks.

Frequently checking for leaks helps to ensure you aren’t using large amounts of water.

2. Plant the right plants

Whether you're installing a new landscape or changing the existing one, select plants that are appropriate for your climate. Consider landscaping techniques designed to create a visually attractive landscape by using low-water and drought-resistant grass, plants, shrubs, and trees. If maintained properly, climate-appropriate landscaping can use less than one-half the water of a traditional landscape.

3. Provide only the water plants need

Automatic landscape irrigation systems are a home's biggest water user. To make sure you're not overwatering, adjust your irrigation controller at least once a month to account for changes in the weather.

4. Install Water Saving Devices

Adding water-saving devices to your home or business can help to conserve water. Consider adding; Water faucet aerators, Low-flow showerheads and Toilet dams.

5. Water Conservation tips for the kitchen

  • Take foods out of the freezer early to allow plenty time to thaw rather than running water over it.
  • Keep water in the fridge so you don’t have to run the tap to get cold water.
  • Completely fill the dishwasher before you turn it on. It can use 35-45 litres per cycle.
  • If you wash dishes by hand, don’t leave the water running for rinsing.
  • Don’t let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. Just rinse them in a stoppered sink or a pan of clean water.
  • Keep cooking fats, oils and grease out of the drain. They can stick to and block the inside of pipes, which can lead to sewer back-ups and basement flooding.
6. Use water Wisely for laundry

Purchase a high efficiency washing machine and try to only do laundry when the machine is full.

7. Other Daily Water Saving Habits

  • Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks.
  • When washing your car, rather than use a running hose consider using a bucket, a sponge, and a hose with a trigger nozzle.
  • Check garden hoses and connections frequently and keep them drip-free. Leaks outside the house may not seem as bad since they are not as visible, but they can be just as wasteful as leaks inside.

Let us take a look at some of the ways of conserving water as suggested by our Instagram family:

SIMPLE ACTIONS TO SAVE THE EARTH

Protecting our planet starts with you. Before we go to the elaborate methods of trying to fight climate change and stop pollution, let us focus on the easy first steps anyone can take to protect our planet.

This series will take a look at a few of the actions we can take, but first let us take a look at the reasons why we need to protect our planet.

The first main reason being there is no other planet! If we destroy this one where will we live? where will our children live? Where will our great-great-grandchildren live?! We want to live happily and peacefully on our green-blue planet 😊

All the beauty Earth has been providing us with is dying, we need to protect all these dying species that make our Earth unique from all the other planets.

Our health is increasingly being tested by the various new and ever mutating viruses and diseases. A healthy planet leads to a healthy life. This makes our fight against pollution so critical. All sorts of diseases and the most nuisance of it all, cancer, are becoming deadlier and more common then ever. An infant dying of cancer is the most devastating news you can hear these days testing our mental health.

These are just some of the main reasons, there are infinite more. We might find other habitable planets in the near future but as for now this is the only planet with food, water and oxygen, not forgetting peace, love and happiness. Lets get together and love and protect it 💚

Let's take a look at what our Instagram family has to say about the simple actions taken to save the Earth:

HOW CAN CHILDREN HELP PREVENT GLOBAL WARMING

We have looked at simple steps we can take at home to combat climate change. So how can children help? There is an increasing importance of teaching our future generations on how to take care of our delicate planet after all they are going to be living in it! So why not start now.

So here are a few ways in which children can actively take part in fighting climate change:

1. Conserve energy

  • Turn off the lights.
  • Close doors immediately so heat does not escape.
  • Take short showers.
  • Walk or bike if you can (instead of having your parents drive you).
  • Turn off your computer when not in use.
2. Convince people around you to save energy

Ignorance has been one of the main roots of global warming . So share what you have learnt through words and actions.

  • Replace incandescent with fluorescent lights. (This saves a lot of money!)
  • Ask your parents or adults around you not to leave the car running needlessly.
  • Recycle  (this saves energy in manufacturing).
  • Run the dishwasher and other appliances on energy saver mode.
  • Keep the house at 68°F or less. And make sure the heat goes off at night and when everyone is away.
  • Start a conservation club at school to raise awareness. Get your fellow students and teachers on board to have the school reduce energy consumption.

3. Keep learning

As much as we try to conserve and use sustainable methods and products in our day to day, finding and implementing sources of energy is also crucial.
Kids are the future of our planet and they are the ones who will be finding better ways to conserve and save it, therefore education is the key to becoming a responsible Earth citizen and continue making good decisions for our planet in helping to find scientific, technological, economic and/or political solutions.

Let us as parents, educators, siblings and guardians help us guide our young ones to a sustainable and greener future!

RANKS OF EXTINCTION

Since we have now defined what extinction is, in this chapter we shall look briefly into the ranks of extinction.

Rates of extinction vary widely.

During the last 100,000 years of the Pleistocene Epoch (about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago), some 40 percent of the existing genera of large mammals in Africa and more than 70 percent in North America, South America, and Australia went extinct.

Ecologists estimate that the present-day extinction rate is 1,000 to 10,000 times the background extinction rate (between one and five species per year) because of deforestation, habitat loss, overhunting, pollution, climate change, and other human activities—the sum total of which will likely result in the loss of between 30 and 50 percent of extant species by the middle of the 21st century.

Although extinction is an ongoing feature of Earth’s flora and fauna (the vast majority of species ever to have lived are extinct), the fossil record reveals five unusually large extinctions, each involving the demise of vast numbers of species. These conspicuous declines in diversity are referred to as mass extinctions; they are distinguished from the majority of extinctions, which occur continually and are referred to as background extinction.

Ranked in descending order of severity, they are:

  1. Permian extinction (about 265.1 million to about 251.9 million years ago), the most dramatic die-off, eliminating about half of all families, some 95 percent of marine species (nearly wiping out brachiopods and corals), and about 70 percent of land species (including plants, insects, and vertebrates).
  2. Ordovician-Silurian extinction (about 443.8 million years ago), which included about 25 percent of marine families and 85 percent of marine species, with brachiopods, conodonts, bryozoans, and trilobites suffering greatly.
  3. Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T), or Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg), extinction (about 66.0 million years ago), involving about 80 percent of all animal species, including the dinosaurs and many species of plants. Although many scientists contend that this event was caused by one or more large comets or asteroids striking Earth, others maintain that it was caused by climatic changes associated with the substantial volcanic activity of the time.
  4. End-Triassic extinction (about 201.3 million years ago), possibly caused by rapid climate change or by an asteroid striking Earth. This mass extinction event caused about 20 percent of marine families and some 76 percent of all extant species to die out, possibly within a span of about 10,000 years, thus opening up numerous ecological niches into which the dinosaurs evolved.
  5. Devonian extinctions (407.6 million to about 358.9 million years ago), which included 15–20 percent of marine families and 70–80 percent of all animal species. Roughly 86 percent of marine brachiopod species perished, along with many corals, conodonts, and trilobites.

IMPORTANCE OF GOING GREEN

Going green has huge effects on our body, mind, relationships, and the world around us in many ways. Our environment can either increase or reduce stress; hence impact the body. The things we see, experience or hear can change our mood and how our immune, endocrine, and nervous system function.

A stressful environment causes anxiety which in turn elevates blood pressure, muscle tension, and heart rate and going green reverses these impacts. A natural environment is a stress reliever, it heals and makes you feel better emotionally and contributes to your physical wellbeing. It helps us cope with pain. This is because trees, water, plants and other natural elements distract us from pain and discomfort.

A green environment also helps us to connect with others. People who have green space around their homes build more relationships and are concerned about supporting each other. Such also lowers aggression, violence, and street crime between people meaning a better capacity to cope with the daily demands.

Going green creates a healthy living environment and also improves lifestyle.

Reduce resources consumption and eliminate wastes.

Conserve natural resources and forests.

Maintain the natural ecological balance on earth so that all living things can survive and thrive in their natural habitat.

Use of fossil fuels like petroleum, natural gas, and coal, and burning wood produce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and many harmful chemicals that pollute the air and have serious consequences on environment and people's health.

Such measures can save lives, because air pollution has become "a major environmental health risk," according to the World Health Organization (WHO), that has led to the premature death of 3 million people. Decreasing air pollutants would reduce water pollution by decreasing acid rain and eutrophication that can harm to wildlife especially in aquatic environments, and crops and trees report Massachusetts' Department of Environmental Protection.

Save Biodiversity and Human Livelihoods.

These are just some of the importance of going green, there are countless more economic, environmental and personal benefits of going green and living a sustainable life.

GO GREEN - An Introduction

The term " Go Green " has been widely used since the early 2000's

The term “go green” seems commonplace today, but the genesis of its mainstream appeal began when Jill Buck, mother of three, started the Go Green Initiative in 2002, according to a May 28, 2010 article by researcher, Rebekah Richards of Answerbag.com Rebekah Richards, Professional Research Staff for Answerbag.com.

In our new blog series we will be looking at what Go Green means and how we can all practice going green in our day-today activities.

Importance of Waste Management

The goal of Zero Waste is to:

  • Maximize recycling
  • Minimize waste
  • Reduce consumption
  • Ensure products are made to be reused, repaired, or recycled
  • Purchase sustainable products
  • The protection of the environment and the health of the population.
  • waste management and recycling collection can help conserve our planet’s natural beauty which can be flawed by thoughtless disposal of waste, fly-tipping and senseless littering.
  • Economic benefits through creating employment.

Zero Waste systems reduce greenhouse gases by:

  • Saving energy -- especially by reducing energy consumption associated with extracting, processing, and transporting raw materials and waste
  • Reducing and eventually eliminating the need for landfills and incinerators

CONCLUSION

Environmental pollution is causing a lot of distress not only to humans but also animals, driving many animal species to endangerment and even extinction. Much is being done to control, monitor and rectify damage done by pollutants. The problems are diverse and some are only being recognized but it is important to keep a close control over pollutants so that we can maintain the environment in an acceptable condition for future generations.

Pollution must be taken seriously, as it has a negative effect on natural elements that are an absolute need for life to exist on earth, such as water and air. Indeed, without it, or if they were present in different quantities, animals – including humans – and plants could not survive.

" Environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented."

EFFECTS OF POLLUTION

Pollution effects are defined as “direct and/or indirect adverse impacts of contaminants on the marine environment, such as harm to living resources and marine ecosystems, including loss of biodiversity, hazards to human health, the hindering of marine activities, including fishing, tourism and recreation and other legitimate uses of the sea, impairment of the quality for use of sea water and reduction of amenities or, in general, impairment of the sustainable use of marine goods and services”

We will focus on some of the effects of pollution:

1. Environmental Degradation

Greenhouse gases, like fossil fuels released by vehicles and factories, and methane, released by livestock, contribute to air pollution and add to climate change by raising the earth's temperature. In a vicious circle, climate change then makes a certain type of air pollution worse. A reaction between combusting fossil fuel emissions and sunlight creates smog, a yellowish or blackish fog also known as "ground level ozone." Climate change also creates more allergenic air pollutants, such as mold caused by damp conditions and pollen caused by a longer pollen season and increased pollen production.

Across the world, climate change leads to more drought, heat waves, rising sea levels, storms, warming oceans and rising sea levels, which affect animal species by destroying their natural habitats.

Environmental pollutants have various adverse health effects from early life some of the most important harmful effects are perinatal disorders, infant mortality, respiratory disorders, allergy, malignancies, cardiovascular disorders, increase in stress oxidative, endothelial dysfunction, mental disorders, and various other harmful effects.

2. Human Health

Air pollution can have a serious heath impact on humans. If you are exposed to very high levels of air pollutants, you may experience irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, wheezing, coughing and breathing problems and have a greater risk of heart attacks.

Air pollution can also exacerbate existing lung and heart conditions, like asthma. Smog can irritate the eyes and throat and also damage the lungs. Children, senior citizens and people who work or exercise outside are at a greater risk. Those most at risk are people with asthma or allergies because pollutants can make their symptoms worse and trigger asthma attacks.

If soil pollutants produce contaminated food, anyone who eats it may become ill. Toxic soil may also cause illness through skin contact or inhalation.

Drinking contaminated water caused by sewage overflow may cause sickness and digestive problems in humans. Pollutants such as mercury in fish and seafood can lead to serious health problems, especially in children and pregnant women.

Similarly, noise pollution leads to hearing loss, stress, and sleep disturbance.

3.Infertile Land

Due to the constant use of insecticides and pesticides, the soil may become infertile. Plants may not be able to grow properly.

Pollutants in water resulting from trash, oil spills, sewage spills and run-off from agricultural fields, construction sites and factories affect native plant and animal species. Various forms of chemicals produced from industrial waste are released into the flowing water which also affects the quality of the soil.

4. Endangers animals

Water pollution in terms of the oil spill may lead to the death of several wildlife species.Animals are also often injured or killed by solid waste discarded in water.

In conclusion:

Pollution not only affects humans by destroying their respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems; it also affects the nature, plants, fruits, vegetables, rivers, ponds, forests, animals, etc, on which they are highly dependent on survival. It is crucial to control pollution as nature, wildlife and human life are precious gifts to mankind.

Remember, unless we embrace sustainable living, go green, and practice zero-waster our world is likely to witness further dramatic transformations due to pollution. So lets join hands in following the right guidelines especially when it comes to disposal of wastes and take the right steps to make way for a better world.

HOW CAN KIDS HELP

Children today leaders tomorrow.

As parents and teachers we need to educate children about the importance of taking care of our environment and all that surrounds us, teach them to be responsible humans and guide them to make the right decisions in favor of our Earth.

There are so many ways to guide and nurture them but the best is through example, children learn from actions and follow in our footsteps. Hand on experiences are the best, so take your time to teach them how to care for our nature.

Here are some ways children can help save trees:

1. Use paper wisely by making space for reusable paper, using both sides of paper and replacing paper bags to reusable lunchboxes.

2. Play and create with trash. Instead of throwing out cardboard boxes, paper towels or shoe boxes, children can be creative and play with them by making forts or cardboard cars. Parents can also help them with many DIY activities such as making bird feeders and picture frames.

3. Borrow, share and donate book is great way to save paper.

4. Plant a tree. Although planting trees is a popular Earth Day activity, fall is the season to plant trees and shrubs. Do your homework to make sure you pick the right tree for your space.

5.  Visit the forest. Pay homage to trees and forests is to spend time with them. Visit a local state or national park.

6. Staying on the trails during forest visits minimizes impact on wilderness areas, preserving them.

Thanks to The Seed of Life Facebook family sharing with us some points on how kids can help save trees:
