KENYAN SCHOOL GARDEN TREES

 Introduction 

The School Garden project initiated by SOL in collaboration with different partners aims to create a safe and productive environment for the underprivileged communities in rural Kenya. 

Schools are then trained to plant their own trees , hence able to provide food and nutrition for their members. The gardens have also helped provide income. 

We all grateful to all the local organizations, schools, teachers, students and most of all the contributors who have helped achieve this goal. 

This blog series will focus on the different trees which have been planted in the gardens, their location and their benefits. 

Together we can help achieve all the zero hunger goals and end hunger.

HOW CAN CHILDREN HELP PREVENT GLOBAL WARMING

We have looked at simple steps we can take at home to combat climate change. So how can children help? There is an increasing importance of teaching our future generations on how to take care of our delicate planet after all they are going to be living in it! So why not start now. 

So here are a few ways in which children can actively take part in fighting climate change: 

1. Conserve energy 

  • Turn off the lights.
  • Close doors immediately so heat does not escape.
  • Take short showers.
  • Walk or bike if you can (instead of having your parents drive you).
  • Turn off your computer when not in use.
2. Convince people around you to save energy 

Ignorance has been one of the main roots of global warming . So share what you have learnt through words and actions. 

  • Replace incandescent with fluorescent lights. (This saves a lot of money!)
  • Ask your parents or adults around you not to leave the car running needlessly. 
  • Recycle  (this saves energy in manufacturing).
  • Run the dishwasher and other appliances on energy saver mode.
  • Keep the house at 68°F or less. And make sure the heat goes off at night and when everyone is away.
  • Start a conservation club at school to raise awareness. Get your fellow students and teachers on board to have the school reduce energy consumption.

3. Keep learning 

As much as we try to conserve and use sustainable methods and products in our day to day, finding and implementing sources of energy is also crucial. 
Kids are the future of our planet and they are the ones who will be finding better ways to conserve and save it, therefore education is the key to becoming a responsible Earth citizen and continue making good decisions for our planet in helping to find scientific, technological, economic and/or political solutions.

HOW CAN KIDS HELP

Children today leaders tomorrow. 

As parents and teachers we need to educate children about the importance of taking care of our environment and all that surrounds us, teach them to be responsible humans and guide them to make the right decisions in favor of our Earth. 

There are so many ways to guide and nurture them but the best is through example, children learn from actions and follow in our footsteps. Hand on experiences are the best, so take your time to teach them how to care for our nature. 

Here are some ways children can help save trees: 

1. Use paper wisely by making space for reusable paper, using both sides of paper and replacing paper bags to reusable lunchboxes. 

2. Play and create with trash. Instead of throwing out cardboard boxes, paper towels or shoe boxes, children can be creative and play with them by making forts or cardboard cars. Parents can also help them with many DIY activities such as making bird feeders and picture frames. 

3. Borrow, share and donate book is great way to save paper. 

4. Plant a tree. Although planting trees is a popular Earth Day activity, fall is the season to plant trees and shrubs. Do your homework to make sure you pick the right tree for your space.

5.  Visit the forest. Pay homage to trees and forests is to spend time with them. Visit a local state or national park.

6. Staying on the trails during forest visits minimizes impact on wilderness areas, preserving them.
